Kriti Sanon slams subtle inequality in Bollywood: “The male actor gets better car or a better room…”
Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon has made a powerful appeal for greater equity within the film industry, urging for fair treatment regardless of gender. During a conversation with NDTV, Kriti spotlighted the ingrained, though often overlooked, disparities that women still face on movie sets even in seemingly trivial ways.
Reflecting on her own upbringing, Kriti shared how her parents raised her and her sister without any gender-based limitations, fostering a sense of freedom and empowerment. In stark contrast, she recounted her mother’s restrictive childhood: “My mom grew up in a time when boys were allowed a lot of things that girls were not. Girls were supposed to stay at home, cook, and follow rules. She wanted to learn swimming or dancing, but couldn't. The only thing she fought for was studying, and she became a professor.” It was this very determination that shaped the atmosphere of her own childhood. She added, “Her first thought for me was, ‘Do whatever you want to. Whatever you dream of, go for it.’ That came from her.”
Once inside Bollywood, however, Kriti discovered that bias wasn’t eradicated; it had merely morphed into subtler forms. She remarked, “It hasn’t happened too many times, but little things like the male actor getting a better car or a better room… It’s not about the car, but about not making me feel smaller because I’m a woman. Just make it equal.”
Further addressing ingrained behaviour on sets, Kriti added, “Sometimes even ADs have a habit of calling the female actor first and waiting for the male actor later. I’ve had to tell them not to do that. The mindset needs to change.”
Now appointed as UNFPA India's Honorary Ambassador for Gender Equality, Kriti stands poised to translate her convictions into influence. Her message is clear: equality should permeate even the smallest decisions from cars and rooms to who’s called first on set because respect and fairness matter just as much as grand gestures.
On the work front, Kriti will be seen alongside Dhanush in Aanand L Rai’s romantic drama Tere Ishk Mein. Set for a theatrical release in November 2025, the teaser has already won hearts with a peek at their on-screen chemistry.
