Kussh Sinha opens up on why Sonakshi Sinha deserves more challenging roles; says, “Directors hesitate to push stars beyond a certain limit”

Sonakshi Sinha has been a prominent presence in Hindi cinema for over a decade. From her blockbuster debut to powerful performances in films like Lootera and Akira, she has showcased various facets of her craft. However, her brother and filmmaker Kussh Sinha believes this is just a glimpse of her true potential on screen.

In a candid conversation with The Free Press Journal, Kussh Sinha acknowledged that he has long felt the industry hasn’t given Sonakshi films that let her truly showcase her full range.

“That was always clear to me because I’ve known her not only as a brother but also as a viewer. I constantly felt her true potential wasn’t being utilized,” he said. “There are several reasons for that — at times, directors hesitate to push stars beyond a certain limit due to concerns about how things might play out on set. But having watched her in films like Lootera, Akira, and even Dabangg as a newcomer, I was certain she possessed tremendous range,” he added.

Kussh, who directed Sonakshi in Nikita Roy, feels the film finally offered her the space she truly deserves. “In Nikita Roy, she showcased that range wonderfully, adding layers of emotional depth to her character while also handling action and responding to unseen elements with conviction. Nikita Roy as a character is very complex – she’s broken, stubborn, overconfident, and it takes an actor capable of capturing all these nuances. I was confident she could, and she did. Even critics have acknowledged this as one of her strongest performances so far in terms of range and emotional depth. I’m glad we were able to collaborate and bring that out together.”

When asked why Sonakshi hasn’t consistently landed roles that highlight her talent, Kussh pointed to the unpredictable nature of filmmaking. “I think it’s a matter of choice. Sometimes actors make decisions that don’t turn out to be the best for them. What looks great on paper or sounds exciting during narration can feel very different once you’re on set. At times, it translates even better than expected, but sometimes it doesn’t,” he explained.

As a director, Kussh believes his job is to push actors to deliver their best. “If the performance is honest, the audience stays engaged. But I don’t think it’s always the actor’s fault when things don’t work. There are so many variables involved in making a film. Translating a story from paper to screen is unpredictable. It’s as much about chance as it is about talent.”
