Kal Penn wants to remake Amitabh Bachchan’s Don in Hollywood; confesses he got addicted to Saath Nibhana Saathiya, saying, “Kokilaben is bada**”
American actor Kal Penn, best known for his roles in The Namesake and the Harold and Kumar franchise, has expressed his desire to remake Amitabh Bachchan’s 1978 classic Don in Hollywood. Speaking at a session titled You Can’t Be Serious at the Jaipur Literature Festival, he revealed his admiration for Bachchan and how the film’s escapist nature could be adapted to a Western setting. The actor, who grew up in an Indian immigrant household, envisions the remake set in locations like Brooklyn or Ohio.
Penn acknowledged the significant impact of both Indian and Western film icons on his career. “The influences I had were mostly American, like Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, and Mira Nair. But who isn’t a huge Amitabh Bachchan fan? The original Don is what I would love to remake,” he shared. He explained that while the setting might change, the essence of the film would remain intact, maintaining its vibrant color palette and thrilling storytelling. Kal Penn’s Unexpected Love for Saath Nibhana Saathiya Beyond his Hollywood ambitions, Penn also admitted to an unusual addiction—watching the Indian soap opera Saath Nibhana Saathiya. He revealed that he initially started watching the show to improve his Hindi when working in India. However, it soon turned into an obsession. “Whenever I am working in India, I try to get a script two months in advance. One of the ways I try to learn and keep up with Hindi is by watching serials. So I got addicted to Saath Nibhana Saathiya,” he said.
Penn amused the audience by referring to the show’s iconic characters. “Kokila Ben is a bad***. You don’t want to cross her, and Gopi is obviously a meme—like Gopi washing a laptop,” he joked, earning laughter from the crowd. He further shared how difficult it was to explain the appeal of such dramatic Indian TV shows to his non-Indian friends. Kal Penn’s Multifaceted Career Penn’s work spans across both commercial and critically acclaimed projects. His filmography includes Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain, The Namesake, Designated Survivor, and The Big Bang Theory. He was recently spotted on the sets of the popular Hindi comedy show Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.
